If the contact pattern is towards the face of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too far away from the ring gear.
Aligning the ring gear and pinion so the contact point of each gear is located at the center is the correct gear pattern.
To correct the pattern the pinion needs to be moved away from the ring gear so that it is positioned farther away from the ring gear centerline.
If the contact pattern is towards the face of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too far away from the ring gear.
