What the Heck – Home Dec! Tunisian crochet placemats and coasters. Why not add some delightful color to your table and crochet this easy-care placemat and coaster set? With the huge selection of cotton, cotton blends, hemp or linen yarn available, What the Heck? Home Dec! needlework is fun and satisfying. This set alternates stripes of solid and variegated Plymouth Fantasy Naturale yarn, crocheted with Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch. Join the fun and add this technique to your crochet “toolbox”. The pattern is written for a two color version (pictured) as well as a one color version. One placemat and two coasters can be crocheted from two hanks of yarn. I chose one hank of a solid and one of a variegated Plymouth Fantasy Naturale – a very soft, yet durable, yarn which is available in 80 colors. It’s fabulous, washable yarn that will come out of the washer and dryer looking brand new every time. I used a size J Tunisian crochet hook. It’s important to go up at least two sizes to prevent curling. Knitter’s Pride and Knit Picks have interchangeable hooks available. In Tunisian crochet, the work is not turned and is worked from the front in forward and return passes. Here is a video link of the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2MQP0JIi4o, however using this conventional beginning, the work tends to curl quite a bit. I’ve developed an unconventional way to begin the project that will prevent the edge from curling! I’m very excited about sharing this idea. I hope you give this pattern a try! Thanks!
